1. Rant

While browsing through the iTunes store earlier this evening looking for an app for my iPhone I came to the conclusion that there is just so many junk apps there that it is hard to actually tell the good ones from the bad, this means that in order to actually find something that is half as good (or has the requirements that you need) you have to filter through pages and pages of drivel. Now obviously apple has tried it’s best to ensure that only quality apps are accepted, albeit through some interesting techniques, and that users are offering feedback, through ratings, it still seems that there is a sizable tonnage of junk being accepted, that’s not to say that just cause I won’t ever need an app that it’s junk that goes without saying, I’m talking about the apps that are gags, or gimmicks the ones that have zero purpose at all, except to lighten some poor 12y/o of his allowance, and that seems to be the case with a lot of the apps that are available there is just no point in them being there except to lighten some change, granted it is just change to some people but it does all add up over time.

Now it seems as though most people wouldn’t blink an eye at say 99c(in the US store) for a small app that tells you the time and the weather in one nice little neat package, but who would spend the same amount on a countdown timer that tells you when the Mayan calendar will end? (I of course mean December 2012 but I digress) When did it happen that people became so aloof when it comes to thinking “oh it’s just 99c”? Only to realise, albeit too late once the bill arrives, that they have spent upwards of $20/m on some junk little apps that do nothing, or very little of nothing. Now one could say don’t let your kids use your phone well the thing is a lot of adults are the ones that are buying and making these apps. There has to come a point where you have to say no to buy something, I guess it’s the fact that the apps cost so little in the short term is what makes them so attractive to people of all ages but there still has to be a personal limit.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact I’m study buyer/consumer behaviour at the moment but really people it’s not that hard to ask yourself “do I need this stapler simulator/random pointless app?”

Just for a touch of irony, this was written, edited and posted from my iPhone using the free tumblr app.
